Glenburgie - Gordon & Macphail

Glenburgie 20 59.9% ABV, 1st fill sherry butt, Gordon & Macphail

Many of the G&M sherry casks from their Connoisseur’s choice line have been good especially the ones released after they changed to this new packaging.

Colour: Copper.

Nose: Fruitiness (apple, prunes), sweetness, some sawn wood, sherry, plum cakes. Complex. Layered. Mild spiciness.

Palate: Full. Fruity. Plums. Some marsh-mellows on top of fruit cake. The distillery character of Glenburgie, especially the fruitness appears. The sherry cask sweetness & spiciness (cloves, some dry ginger) comes up. Then the oakiness.

Finish: Long. Dry sweetness and mild fruitiness & a bit of wood spice.

I did not like this whisky very much. I felt there is no harmony. The fruitiness from the distillery character is overridden by the sherry cask influence which is overridden by the oakiness from the vintage. The high ABV works well though .’
